TEAM 9013 MATRIX
Meet the Team
We are Team 9013 Merritt Island Matrix. We have been together since 2014, and our main goal is to introduce students to the STEAM programs via FIRST. Our humble beginnings started with two FIRST Lego League teams: Space Chocolate and Scrap Metal. Space Chocolate made it to states. The mentors of Space Chocolate, Scrap Metal, and Horsepower decided that they wanted to create an FTC team to feed experienced members to FRC team 801 Horsepower. Our team name, Matrix, came from one of our original mentors Mrs.Leutbecker and it means “Mother”. We found this name fitting because our team was the “mother” of robotics in Merritt Island.
FIRST TECH CHALLENGE
First Tech Challenge (FTC) is a robotics competition where teams in a league compete in a yearly challenge. Located in between FIRST Lego League (FLL) and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), FTC is considered the middle level of FIRST robotics. Every September a new challenge is announced. The challenge consists of several different tasks that score points when successfully completed. Once the challenge is announced, teams have six weeks to build a robot that can complete these tasks, before the first tournament. There are three qualifying tournaments and a league championship, which the top performing teams in the league are invited to. Beyond the league championship are the state, super-regional, and world championships.
TEAM 9013'S MISSION
The mission of FIRST FTC Team 9013 is to maximize student's potential and self confidence by developing a safe, open, and hands-on working environment that encourages real world applications in leadership, teamwork, innovation, and communication skills. Combining an understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) and business practices, we aspire to have a competitive team with spirit and gracious professionalism that reaches out to make a difference in our community. And of course, we want to have FUN along the way.
Matrix started as two FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams back in 2008. Through the years our program steadily grew in size and our teams because very successful. In 2014, we decided to make the move to FTC. Our FTC years did not start out easy, but we have slowly made our way to becoming a successful FTC team. The 2016-2017 season "Velocity Vortex" was our turning point. Our robot "Muffin Top 2.0" was the best performing robot we had built at that time and gave us an incredible season. Since then, we have continued building our team, gaining sponsors, hosting successful fundraising events, and becoming a well-respected team in our league. This year's season, "Rover Ruckus" has been a remarkable experience. We've had the largest budget we've ever had, won the highest match score of the season at 415 points, and for the first time in team history, became first place champions at the second qualifying tournament. Our season got even better from there, as we went on to win the Space Coast League Championship, advance to the Florida Championship, named the Scott Division Champions at the Florida Championship, and made it all the way to the final match of the Florida Rover Ruckus season!!! While we did not make it to the World Championship, our team has been overjoyed with success this season and we are hoping to be just as successful for years to come.
